Parent Leadership Hub Weekly E-Newsletter for July 16,2009

The attached "Parent Leadership Hub" Weekly Email Update is sent to you from WSPEI and WI FACETS.   The Parent Leadership Hub supports parents/family members, educators and other community partners to build capacity regarding meaningful family involvement.   The Hub serves three primary purposes:
(1) To support parents of children with disabilities between birth and 26 years of age to participate as partners in the professional development activities of each of the other Statewide Initiatives as they design, deliver and support professional development experiences; and
(2) To facilitate opportunities for parents/family members to build leadership skills; and
(3)  To provide Content Focused technical assistance concerning family involvement.

Parent/Personnel Development Opportunities

  1. Cookout and Baseball Game
    July 27, August 24 - Monday evenings from 5:00-7:00pm

    Children, teens and adults with disabilities are invited to come with their family members and friends for an evening of a grill cooked meal and a good time playing baseball! One hot dog, a bag of chips and a soda for $3/person. Sign up for all three dates for a great deal of $8/person! Additional snack and dessert items made by the Easter Seals Adult Day Services participants will also be available for purchase.

  4. Statewide Autism Trainings
    Registration is available for the 2009-2010 autism trainings.  Information and registration are located on the Department of Public Instruction Special Education autism homepage at http://dpi.wi.gov/sped/autism.htm. The dates and locations are:  Madison:  August 5-6 (basic); September 29-30 (advanced-assessment); and October 14-15 (advanced-challenging behavior).  Wausau:  January 27-28 (basic) and March 9-10 (advanced-challenging behavior).   1. Upcoming Self-Employment Webcast – The Customized Self-Employment Model
    July 22, 2009 from 2:00 – 2:45 p.m. ET
    Presenters: Rich Sanders and Pam Sprout

    START-UP/Alaska will be highlighting innovative small businesses that focus on the "customized" aspects of the project and how the customization of self-employment services sets them apart from everyday small business or microenterprise business startups. The presenters will provide strategies and progress with integrating the customized self-employment model into existing employment systems serving individuals in both rural and urban areas for sustainability.   2. Autism Webcourse Into Adulthood: Transition to Work for Individuals with Autism
    (October 5 – November 16)
    This 6-week course will provide the participant with an in-depth understanding of the concepts related to positive transition planning for youth with autism. Upon successful completion, you may earn CRCs, CEUs, or 45 points toward teacher licensure re-certification under the professional development category with prior approval of your

    This website provides online information, support, and professional development on topics related to the transition from school to adult life for youth with disabilities.   4. Early Learning and Readiness for School
    Foster young children's early learning and readiness for school with this new interactive learning tool from ZERO TO THREE. The tool gives parents and caregivers key information about how children develop school readiness skills; includes video clips of children learning these skills through everyday interactions with their parents; and describes parent-child activities that can help children develop school readiness skills.

  6. Progress Monitoring Tools
    The Progress Monitoring Tools Chart from the National Center on Response to Intervention provides ratings on the technical adequacy of reading and math progress monitoring tools used within an RTI context. The chart's purpose is to help educators and families select the progress monitoring tools that best meet their individual needs.
