The Parent Leadership Hub supports parents/family members, educators and other community partners to build capacity regarding meaningful family involvement. The Hub serves three primary purposes:
(1) To support parents of children with disabilities between birth and 26 years of age to participate as partners in the professional development activities of each of the other Statewide Initiatives as they design, deliver and support professional development experiences; and
(2) To facilitate opportunities for parents/family members to build leadership skills; and
(3) To provide Content Focused technical assistance concerning family involvement.

Deadline for submitting contributions to each week's issue is Tuesday noon. For time sensitive training advertisements, the information should be sent a minimum of two weeks prior to the event date; ideally a month ahead of time. Material appropriate for the weekly newsletter include web links to sources of family involvement/parent leadership resources and advertisements for statewide trainings for parents, youth or parent/educator audiences (we don’t post research articles, reports or news opinion articles). Your submittal may not be in the final copy if it was in a previous weekly email, the event date has passed or the web link doesn’t work. Please, send submittals to phyllis@banbury.com

'Just in Time Information' Now Available
A new online repository of information is available for parents, youth and professionals who are searching for articles previously posted to the PL Hub Weekly E-Newsletters since October 2008. This repository of information will help the reader locate valuable information by topic, 'just in time'. Currently, there are web pages for 'Transition to Adult Life' and 'Family Involvement'. Future web pages will include 'Early Childhood' and 'School-Age Years'.
For our reader's convenience, all archived issues of the E-Newsletter will eventually be re-posted on the 'Just in Time Information' page of the PL Hub website. We hope this format will help our readers quickly access the resources they need, when they need them, and that it will be visited frequently. Additions are always welcome! To submit suggested resources and training products, simply follow the instructions and criteria provided in the introduction to each of the PL Hub Weekly Updates.

- Exploration by Design: How CAD Works
A Free Day Camp for High School Students being held at the University of Wisconsin-Madison – August 9-13, 2010
Learn how Computer aided Design, or CAD, is used to design and produce products. Design your own product and then actually produce it using a rapid prototype machine. This five-day immersion day camp for high school students takes place from 8 a.m.—noon on August 9-13 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Space is limited to 15 students. - Nomination for Outstanding Wisconsin Youth Leader Award
The Wisconsin Community on Transition Youth Development and Leadership is pleased to announce the First Annual Outstanding Youth Leader Award. This year's award will be presented to a Wisconsin Youth Leader who has gone above and beyond in demonstrating self-determination and self-advocacy in one of the focus areas within the Wisconsin Community on Transition. Nominees are being accepted from each practice group. The Youth Development and Leadership Practice Group will determine the winner and notify him or her to attend the Wisconsin Community on Transition meeting in Madison on June 24th for an award ceremony. This year's recipient will receive a plaque and a 64 Gigabyte iPod.
To submit a nomination: Please provide the young person's name, city and telephone number, plus a short description of the individual's contributions, affiliations, and/or involvements which warrant the receipt of this year's award. Age limitation: Please limit nominations to individuals who are between 15-25 years of age. Please send your nomination to Cheryl Schiltz at cheryls@ilcw.org by May 10, 2010.
- Financial Assistance for Students with Down Syndrome
Financial assistance is available to young adults with Down syndrome who want to enroll in post-secondary programs or take classes that will help them with employment, independent living and life skills. To date, over thirty students have received grants from the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) to help cover the costs of pursuing their post-secondary education and enrichment goals. - Health Care Act Provisions Information for Families of Youth with Disabilities
The recently passed Health Care Reform Act will affect people with disabilities and their families. Two provisions include prohibiting insurance companies from denying coverage to children based on pre-existing conditions and allowing parents to keep adult children on their insurance plans until age 26. PACER's Technical Assistance on Transition and the Rehabilitation Act (TATRA) Project has developed a list of provisions of interest to families of children and youth with disabilities. http://www.pacer.org/tatra/pdf/healthcareact2010.pdf
- Resources from 2009 Fall Self-Directed Supports Conference

Individuals with disabilities, direct-care workers and self-determination advocates all contributed to the self-determination stories. Save the date of November 9-10, 2010 at the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells for the next conference featuring keynote presentations, workshop sessions and exploration stations.
- Creating Agreement Resources
The IDEA Partnership's Creating Agreement Workgroup has developed a gallery of new resources which included the "Building Partnerships, Creating Agreement" PowerPoint presentation and accompanying presenter guide, dialogue guides, and other resource materials. To review the resources, click here:

- Summer Camp Opportunities
Many summer camp opportunities are available to Wisconsin youth. The Wisconsin Center for Academically Talented Youth offers programs that focus on one subject at an accelerated pace. Programs start in grades 4-6 (held at Beloit College), include grades 7-8 (at Edgewood College), and culminate with a high school program that gives students an opportunity for rigorous study of a high school or college level topic (at UW-Madison).
UW-La Crosse offers archaeology workshops for grades 1-9 and for adults. Different classes explore archaeology in general as well as ancient cultures of the Americas. Three-day and one-week field schools offer the chance to dig a little deeper.
Concordia Language Villages offers immersion programs in a wide range of languages and cultures, from Arabic to Finnish. The group writes: "Geography, history, political science and international relations are drawn on, creating learning situations that challenge participants to use language as a tool for understanding the complexities of the world around them."
The website, MySummerCamps.com, has a searchable list of thousands of camps all over the world, including special needs camps, adventure camps, arts camps, sports camps, and many other categories.
- Audio Series on Autism from the American Academy of Pediatrics
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has launched a new audio series, entitled Sound Advice on Autism, which includes audio interviews with developmental and behavioral pediatricians, a pediatric neurologist, autism researchers and parents of children with autism.
